If you live in the California desert, you already know water is not to be wasted. You also know the desert environment is tough on your car's exterior. Keeping your car clean and protected is a tall order in an environment where water is precious.  Giving your car a bath at home can use upwards of 80 gallons of water, but there is a better solution.

Enter, the waterless car wash.

What Is a Waterless Car Wash?

A waterless car wash is a method of washing your car using very little water. The process uses chemicals designed to break down dirt and grime on your car and suspend it in the waterless car wash liquid so you can just wipe it off. Spray on, wipe off, you're done.

The only water you will need for this type of wash is the water to wash your towels. If you have enough towels, you can throw them all in the washing machine when you are done. If not, you will need a bucket of warm water to rinse the towels out as you use them.

Many waterless car washes today also come with some type of protectant in them. This gives you a barrier between your car's finish and the wind, sand, and grit of the desert.

Waterless Car Wash Options

When it comes to waterless car washes, you have two options. The first, and easiest, is a premixed car wash fluid. This fluid comes diluted to the manufacturer's specifications. All you have to do is spray it on and wipe it off.

The second is a waterless car wash concentrate. Just like concentrated orange juice, this will have to be mixed with water to get it to the correct dilution. (Please don't drink it!) Some brands come with measuring cups and sprayers to make this option a little easier for the user.

How to Use Waterless Car Wash

To get started using a waterless car wash you will need good towels with a heavy nap, a spray bottle, and a bucket of warm water for rinsing your towels. If you are using a concentrate, you will need to dilute it correctly and put it in a spray bottle.

Find as close to a shady spot as possible in the desert. An open canopy or a garage with the door open will work well. Waterless car wash needs to be wiped off while it is still wet, so working under cover will help you when it comes to battling the sun.

Spray the car wash on a two-foot by two-foot section of the car and then wipe it off. Wipe in one direction only. No Karate Kid circles. Wiping in a circular motion will drag dirt back into the section you have just cleaned.

Repeat until the whole car is clean. Be sure to keep your towels clean to avoid dragging dirt particles across the finish of your car. Either use a clean towel or rinse the towel well in warm water before you continue washing.

A Few Tips

Waterless car washing is a new thing for a lot of people. It seems a bit counter-intuitive to wash something without water. Here are a few more tips to get the most out of your wash.

  • Avoid washes with silicone in them. Silicone particles can become embedded in your finish and cause dulling.
  • Rinse heavy dirt. If you just came back from the mud pit, your vehicle will need to be rinsed of heavy dirt before you start the waterless wash.
  • Wipe in one direction only. This will keep dirt from dragging across your paint.
  • Start at the top of your vehicle. Unless you keep your car under a pigeon's nest, the top of your car is cleaner than the bottom. Clean the top first to avoid spreading dirt to other parts of your car.
  • Use clean heavy nap or microfiber towels. These towels have plenty of room to suck the dirt away from your vehicle instead of grinding it into your paint job.
  • Wipe with light pressure. No need to try and put your hand through the hood. Light pressure will be enough to pull up the grit and grime on your car.

Desert living is tough on a car. Wind, sand, and sun can all wreak havoc on your car's exterior. You need to clean and protect your car without wasting gallons and gallons of water.
