Choosing a car drying towel takes more than comparing the largest GSM number on the label. The towel’s construction, dimensions, and intended use matter too.
For detailers buying supplies for a busy shop or mobile route, the practical question is: which towel fits the job and is comfortable to use throughout the day?
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It describes the fabric’s weight per unit of area.
A higher GSM means more fabric weight for the same size towel. It does not, by itself, tell you how much water a towel will absorb or whether it is the best choice for your workflow. Compare the weave and dimensions alongside GSM.
Compare size as well as GSM
Golden State offers two examples that make this distinction clear:
| Drying towel | GSM | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Night Stalker Twisted Loop Microfiber | 1,200 | 24 × 36 inches |
| The Storm Twisted Loop Microfiber | 1,200 | 16 × 24 inches |
Both have the same listed GSM, but the Night Stalker has more than twice the fabric area.
Consider the larger size when you want more towel coverage across broad panels. Consider the smaller size when you prefer something easier to fold and maneuver. Your preference may change with the vehicle and how you dry it.
Choose a towel designed for the task
Drying and buffing are different jobs. A towel selected for removing water does not automatically replace one chosen for finishing work.
For example, Golden State’s Birdie Collection consists of 700 GSM, 16 × 16-inch buffing towels. The Night Stalker and Storm are twisted-loop drying options. Start with the intended task, then compare the specifications within that group.
Build a practical towel setup
For a mobile route or detailing shop, consider carrying:
- A larger drying towel for broad exterior panels.
- A smaller drying towel for easier handling and follow-up work.
- Separate towels for buffing, glass, interiors, and dirty areas.
- Clean replacements for towels that become contaminated or too wet to use effectively.
Treat this as a starting point. Adjust quantities to your daily workload and laundry schedule.
Care for your drying towels
Follow each towel’s care instructions. Golden State’s Night Stalker care guidance recommends cold or lukewarm washing, avoiding bleach and fabric softener, washing separately from cotton laundry, and using low or no heat when tumble drying.
Good towel care belongs in the buying decision, especially when you are building a repeatable shop routine.
So, which GSM should you buy?
There is no single GSM number that answers every drying need. Choose a dedicated drying towel, compare its construction and size, and consider how it fits your work.
For a 1,200 GSM twisted-loop option, compare the larger Night Stalker with the more compact Storm.
